
A plain 4-inch concrete slab costs about $4 to $8 per square foot installed, so a 12 by 20 shed pad lands near $1,000 to $1,900 and a 24 by 24 garage slab at 5 inches with real rebar lands closer to $4,000 to $7,000. Those are the numbers. The interesting part is why two quotes for the identical rectangle can differ by 40 percent.
Spoiler: it's almost never the concrete. Ready-mix is a commodity and everybody buys it from the same plant. The spread is in what happens before the truck shows up.

Small jobs carry a floor price. Most crews have a minimum somewhere between $800 and $1,500, because mobilizing a truck, a crew, and a half day of labor costs about the same whether you pour 120 square feet or 400. That is why a $1,200 shed pad feels steep per foot. Two small pads on one trip beat two trips a year apart.
Where the money actually goes
Roughly speaking, on a typical residential slab:
- Concrete itself: 25 to 35 percent of the total
- Base prep, excavation, and haul-off: 20 to 30 percent
- Forming and reinforcement: 15 to 20 percent
- Labor to place, screed, float, and finish: 25 to 30 percent
Read that again and notice the concrete is the minority. Anybody who wins a bid by being cheap is being cheap on prep, because that's where there's room.
Thickness, base, and steel: the spec that matters
Thickness. Four inches is the residential default and genuinely fine for patios, sheds, walkways and cars. Five to six inches for garages, shops, RV pads, and anywhere a loaded trailer parks. Four to five adds about 25 percent more volume — real money on 600 square feet, and usually worth it if trucks are involved.
Base. Four inches of compacted crushed aggregate over a subgrade compacted to around 95 percent standard Proctor, in lifts rather than dumped and driven over once. Nobody can see it afterwards, which is why it gets skipped and why it is the most common reason a slab fails early.
Steel. Number 3 rebar on 18-inch centers, or number 4 on 24-inch centers for heavier loads, tied in a grid and lifted onto chairs so it sits at mid-depth. Rebar lying in the dirt at the bottom of the pour does approximately nothing. Welded wire mesh works for light-duty slabs if it is also held up. Polypropylene fiber at around 1.5 pounds per cubic yard controls plastic shrinkage cracking and does not replace structural steel.
Mix. 3,000 psi is the common residential floor; 4,000 psi anywhere vehicles roll. If winters go below freezing, ask for 5 to 7 percent entrained air, which is what lets the paste survive freeze-thaw. Where it never freezes, entrained air just costs you compressive strength.
And a small plea: do not let anyone add water at the truck to make it pour easier. Every extra gallon raises the water-cement ratio and drops the strength. A slab that was supposed to be 4,000 psi can come in hundreds of psi lower because somebody was in a hurry.
Control joints, curing, and the crack conversation
Concrete cracks. That's not a defect, it's material science. What a good crew sells you is control over where.
The numbers here come from NRMCA's CIP 6 sheet on joints in slabs on grade, and they are worth quoting properly because the shorthand versions get the units wrong. Contraction joints want a groove at least a quarter of the slab thickness, but never less than 1 inch — on a 4-inch slab both rules land on the same number, which is why the 1-inch floor keeps getting dropped. Maximum spacing is 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, so a 4-inch slab gets joints around every 10 feet, capped at 15 feet regardless. Panels stay square: length no more than 1.5 times width, no L shapes.
Timing splits by method. A conventional wet-cut saw runs within 4 to 12 hours of finishing — the 4-hour end in hot weather, the 12-hour end in cold. An early-entry dry-cut saw goes in 1 to 4 hours after finishing and cuts shallower, minimum 1 inch. Cut late and the slab has already picked its own line. An isolation joint goes wherever the slab meets a foundation, column or neighboring slab.
Curing matters as much as mixing. Keep it damp or hit it with a curing compound for the first several days. Concrete hits roughly 60 percent of design strength at 7 days and its nominal full strength at 28.
What a real quote should list
Ask for these six lines. If a bid is one number on a business card, that's information too.
- Square footage, thickness, and psi
- Depth of base material and whether the subgrade is being compacted
- Reinforcement type, size, and spacing, and whether chairs are used
- Joint layout and cutting method
- Excavation and haul-off of spoil, or whether that's yours
- Finish type and whether a cure or sealer is included
When you should pour it yourself
Genuinely, some of these are DIY jobs and we'd rather you knew.
Under about 80 square feet, go for it. A 4 by 4 AC pad, a small landing, a mailbox base, a 6 by 8 shed pad. Bagged mix, a rented mixer, a screed board, a magnesium float, and a Saturday. Budget $150 to $400 in materials and expect a workout.
Above that, hire it out. Not because it's complicated, but because it's a race. Once a truck dumps 4 cubic yards you have a finite window to screed, bull float, edge, joint and finish before the concrete stops listening. Three inexperienced people and 400 square feet is how a slab ends up with a permanent ripple. There is no undo.
And if all you need is a level surface under a shed, a compacted gravel pad with a pressure-treated skid frame costs a fraction of concrete. Not every structure needs a slab.
Bottom line
Budget $4 to $8 per square foot for a standard 4-inch slab, $7 to $12 for a 5 to 6 inch slab carrying vehicles, and expect a small-job minimum on anything under about 200 square feet. Then compare bids on base depth, rebar spec, and joint plan rather than on the total.
